Summary of Job Duties:

The APRN is a skilled healthcare provider who has successfully completed an educational program that provides specialized certification and is regulated by either the Arkansas State Board of Nursing or the Arkansas State Medical Board. The APRN manifests a high level of expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of actual and potential health problems of pediatric/adolescent patients and their families. The APRN possesses an advanced knowledge level, skill and competence in the provision of care to specific patient and family populations and serves across the care continuum as a clinical resource for pediatric and adolescent patients, families, staff and the community. The APRN is a skilled healthcare provider who utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessments, identification of differential diagnoses, and the prescription of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations. The APRN provides direct management of acute and chronic illness and disease in the outpatient setting. The APRN practices autonomously in a collaborative practice setting with a physician or physicians with practice comparable in scope, specialty or expertise. The APRN may also work with multidisciplinary teams. The APRN is responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the philosophy and policies of UAMS and the mission of Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The role of this provider may also include conducting research, providing education, and impacting policy.

Qualifications:

  • ​Graduated from an accredited nursing program with at least a Master’s in Nursing.

  • National Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the specialty of Acute or Primary Care. 

  • May have a certification as a Pediatric Nurse practitioner in either acute or primary care although primary care preferred. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct clinical services for patients according to established protocols and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards in collaboration with a physician.

  • Obtain patient health histories, complete physical examinations, and interpret hemodynamic data.

  • Document pertinent normal and abnormal findings.

  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.

  • Formulate and implement treatment plans for the management of acute and chronic illnesses in collaboration with the physician.

  • Document in medical records appropriately.

  • Provide family-centered care to meet the child’s health care needs.

  • Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice. 

  • Participate in staff education, and educate other APRN/PA students, residents and/or fellows.

  • Provide leadership and professional interaction within your team or to team members.

  • Coordinate with families the care and progress of their child in person, by telephone, or by email as appropriate.

  • Communicate with others with mutual respect and professional demeanor. 

  • Adhere to all standard policies and procedures.

  • Participate in QI or research projects as deemed necessary by your department. 

  • May perform other duties as assigned by the Section Chief, Medical Director, or APRN Coordinator.
