Summary

5 North is a 16 bed, respiratory care step down unit. The Respiratory Care Unit provides an intermediate level of care for patients whose illness severity may not warrant ICU care but are not yet ready for the general medical-surgical units. This includes patients with COPD, CHF, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, sepsis, DKA, and chest tubes.

The clinical staff on 5 North also care for complex patients with increased oxygen needs including Bipap, high flow oxygen, and tracheostomy patients who may or may not require a ventilator. There is a patient centered focus involving inter professional collaboration with nursing, respiratory therapy, the pulmonary care team, and the hospitalist group.

Shifts are 12 hours 7a-730p or 7p-730a. Staff are either day/night rotators or full time nights. Day/night rotators tend to work 0-2 night shifts every 4 weeks. All staff are required to work 4 weekend shifts every 4 weeks as well as a holiday rotation.

Education

High school or equivalent (GED). Completion of a certificate program for Licensed Nursing Assistant.

Certification, Registration & Licensure

NH LNA Licensure

American Heart Association BLS.

Experience

Evidence of the ability to perform as a member of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Performs activities of daily living and personal care needs under the guidance and supervision of the Registered Nurse.

  • Performs technical skills/procedures relating to physical, mental health and social needs of patients under the guidance and supervision of the RN.

  • Documents care provided and reports to the RN observations of patient’s physical, social and mental status and basic patient data collected.

  • Demonstrates adherence to safe patient handling policy.

  • Demonstrates time management skills.

  • Maintains the patient care areas to ensure cleanliness, safety and supplies of material and equipment.

  • Receives delegated work adhering to the five rights of delegation.

  • Performs job specific requirements and other duties as assigned.

  • Serves as a preceptor for new employees.
