La Rabida Children’s Hospital is hiring a Full-Time, Outpatient Charge Nurse (RN) to join our team in Chicago, IL!

Job Summary:
The RN charge nurse in collaboration with ambulatory nursing and interdisciplinary teams, facilitates the coordination of care among all patients seen within the outpatient center. The charge nurse focuses on modeling excellence in patient care through effectively and efficiently coordinating patient care clinic assignments among the ambulatory nursing team; using effective communication with patients/families and team members; and assessing the needs of acute and chronically ill children. The charge nurse models the nursing process in a family-centered interdisciplinary context to coordinate care and achieve team goals.

Essential Outpatient Charge Nurse Functions:

  • Completes initial and ongoing assessments and actively seeks assistance to verify assessments/changes noted.
  • Identifies problems e.g., nursing diagnosis, and adds to problem list/Kardex.
  • Carries out interventions defined in policy or individual plan of care as well as prescribed orders. Seeks assistance when the relationship between orders and assessment is unclear. (e.g., abnormal lab values.) Maintains working knowledge of routine procedures, techniques, and treatments as defined in policy.
  • Evaluate interventions against desired goals and seek input on changes.
  • Documents assessments, interventions, and patient responses, manually and electronically. Verifies and transcribes medical orders.
  • Collaborates with ambulatory services manager regarding quality improvement initiatives to enhance care provided to patients and families.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment by providing care that follows policies and procedures and is in accord with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates Unit-specific skills and competencies (e.g., Tracheostomy Certification).
  • Knowledgeable in using patient care equipment; recognizes any malfunction, takes out of services, and reports immediately.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of infection control and safety precautions (e.g., isolation, IV-line care).
  • Displays basic knowledge of JCAHO, IDPH, HIPPA, and other regulatory requirements. Participates in continuous preparation for survey.
  • Assesses patient/family readiness to learn.
  • Sets mutual goals and provides patient/family education, evaluates the efficacy of teaching, and documents in the patient record.
  • Obtains education materials and uses tools appropriate to the patient’s age and/or special needs.
  • Provide specific discharge instructions for this episode of care.
  • Attends/Completes all mandatory education and in-services within the appropriate timeframe.
  • Models professional service excellence behaviors and performs service recovery with patients and families as needs arise.
  • Enhances the coordination of care of all primary and specialty provider teams by ensuring that there are consistent daily nursing and clinic/space pod assignments.
  • Assists nursing staff with any potential clinic flow issues to ensure that outpatient visits can commence in an efficient manner (i.e., room utilization issues, assisting with immunizations, discharges, and/or admissions, and infection control concerns).
  • Partners with scheduling and registration staff to problem-solve any patient access-related concerns and/or issues.
  • Coordinates the completion of prep and end-of-day procedures (i.e., checking crash cart, point of care testing equipment, spirometry equipment, medication refrigerator, stocking/organizing clinical space, review and prep of clinic schedules, adjustments to staffing assignments, prep paperwork for outpatient sessions).
  • Delegate patient care tasks to other members of the team: assigning responsibilities, evaluating completion of tasks, and providing education, feedback, and coaching to complete tasks.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Promotes collaboration among healthcare team members.
  • Attends at least 4 hours annually of non-mandatory continuing education.
  • Participates in at least 6 monthly nursing staff meetings.

What we need from you:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. BSN preferred.
  • Related Work Experience: Charge nursing experience within an ambulatory or inpatient setting is preferred. Pediatric nursing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois required.
  • Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Fundamental knowledge of growth and development principles and Family-centered philosophy.
  • CPR required. Only certifications issued by the American Heart Association, or the American Red Cross will be accepted.
